Encouragement

Hello again!

After two relatively productive days and a little encouragement from friends who read the blog, I am back at it today. I have been trying to get ready for Silverado's debate camp this week, which is always more complicated and time consuming then I think it will be, but then it's also a good tune-up for the school year to start, in a way. We also had Mariellen's parents stop in for dinner on their way to the airport. They're off to Boston for a wedding. It was nice to see them and help them relax before they headed off.

Jeff Newmark was also in town for a while before heading back to NYC and then to Japan. We had some good conversations and watched The Island together. I actually liked the movie, although it was a little awkward because I noticed some similarities in the movie with the Holocaust, which led to a strange conversation (initiated by me, of course) about that issue with Jeff and Mariellen. I think it was worth talking about it, it was just a little strange.

The movie is probably a 3 out of 4, but I'm being pretty forgiving of some pretty major plot holes. I enjoyed the ride. Some stunts and explosions unlike things I've seen before, and the beginning sci-fi parts are actually pretty interesting. Ewan McGregor is pretty good in two different roles, and Scarlett Johansen is easy on the eyes.

We also rented Spanglish this week, which was actually pretty good -- better than I thought because it got some bad reviews. It's definitely not a comedy, but it has plenty of lighthearted moments. Definitely worth renting.

Hope you're all well. Vicki is right, it is nice to be able to take care of some errands during the week.

Hey Scott,

Good seeing you guys too. The Island had its share of moments, but I just felt the chase scenes stretched too far toward the end. The clones' naivety in their march to the "island" did elicit Holocaust imagery, but the cheery ending and high-profile actors softened the emotional impact for me.

Japan also is showing The Island, but I haven't heard or read any Japanese reviews of the movie.

Good luck with your preparation for the next term.
