Democratic debate / politics
I watched pretty much the whole CNN Democratic debate on my laptop Friday and Saturday, and I have to say that Hillary had the best lines of the night. She also appeared confident and "ready to lead on day one," whatever that means. I thought CNN did an adequate job of putting on the debate, but Wolf Blitzer has never been my favorite anchor, and his questions tended to be of the "false choice" variety -- "what's more important, national security or human rights?"; "assuming we can't get comprehensive immigration reform, do you support driver's licenses for illegal immigrants?" Obama flubbed that last question, giving the appearance that he was backpedaling when in fact he was maintaining more or less the same position as he had before. I think the answer is probably comprehensive immigration reform, but Wolf wanted yes or no answers. Hillary's one-word "no" answer sounded kind of like a "y-no" to me, so maybe she flubbed it, too. I don't like Hillary's front-runner campaign, where she simply exploits her name recognition and the fact that she's a woman, but I think she won the debate in the eyes of most observers. Still, I'm supporting Obama in the caucus, and I like him the best of all the candidates because he probably does represent real change -- generational change, an international perspective on foreign affairs, and a real chance for health care reform. Hillary does really bring back all the memories and policy positions of the Clinton years, which weren't all rosy for the country.
