It IS Over

Congratulations to Barack Obama for stopping the Hillary express to the White House. Now he has to convince millions of voters that he really is a better option than John McCain, despite his "inexperience." I think the "inexperience" line is already being burned into the consciousness of Americans by the McCain people, who have been talking like this for months. Obama will have to rise above the attacks in order to be President. Obama has to convince Baby Boomers that he is the right choice -- the Boomers have to decide that they are comfortable with George W. Bush and Bill Clinton as the two Boomer Presidents, which will be a tough pill for many in that generation to swallow. The Boomers are not ready to give up the Presidency, but they may be forced to given the nature of the change that is necessary. Still, they enjoy a strong demographic advantage compared to "Gen X" (ugh), and it remains to be seen whether the "Millenial" generation will show up to vote. This is the first post-Boomer candidacy, and it will undoubtedly be a challenge to Boomer ways of thinking. Get ready for a wild ride!

Here's a New York Times "Week in Review" article from January 2007 discussing generational politics.
