After watching this 90-minute debate, I get the feeling that McCain's feistiness was misplaced. He really believed that going after Obama on Ayers and ACORN was the best way to win the argument, but Obama's answer -- the American people want answers on how best to solve problems, not character assassination -- was sufficient for me. Obama smiled a lot at McCain's assertions. Both men probably got some facts wrong. I could tell, though, that McCain was on the attack, looking for any advantage, and Obama had an answer for just about every charge. The question of abortion came up, and Obama did a better job of answering the question directly than McCain. McCain said he wouldn't have a "litmus test" over and over again, but couldn't say exactly where he stood on appointing justices who disagreed with him on abortion. Overall, Obama appeared calm and in control, and McCain seemed overly aggressive in raising minor points. The Columbian Free Trade Agreement became a major point for McCain -- does anyone really think that that agreement is the best we can do to improve our economy?
Obama seemed to have a firmer grasp on the big picture.
