Julie & Julia
Yes, I was nearly the only guy in the theater for the showing of this film, which I saw on Sunday afternoon. Which is a shame, because it's really pretty good. There is no action in the film, but there is a positive depiction of two different marriages -- one set in our time frame and the other in the 1940s and 50s. (My time frames may be a little off, but from what I picked up from the period costumes and political references, that's my best guess.) I think I wanted to take a break from all the action and delve into some character-driven movies like Up and Julie & Julia this summer. The movie delivers a love story of sorts between the modern woman, Julie, and Julia Child, but it's nothing inappropriate or kinky. The movie is refreshing if only because it doesn't shy away from the joys of marriage, including sex, along with the difficulties. Compared to horror flicks like The Stepfather, which was previewed before this movie, this one is surprisingly decent and positive. It doesn't have perfect people in it, but it does show how one person's life can influence another's in a positive way.

I saw the film in NY with Akiko. I noticed that the moviegoers skewed toward the middle aged crowd but that it had a fair share of men in it. Having seen a number of recent movies starring Amy Adams (Enchanted, Charlie Wilson's War), I felt that Adams was too perky to portray the angst-ridden Julie. It's kind of ironic to know that Julie also divorced her husband (though a couple of years after the blog experiment ended)
Oy! I know the movies and real life don't exactly match, but I have to admit I was rooting for Julie's marriage by the end of the movie. I'm disappointed to learn of her divorce, if for no other reason than it puts a much different spin on the end of the movie. Oh well, I guess I'll have to find some other inspiration for my blog.
