Education Reform that Makes Sense

Just about every paragraph of this story on Pres. Obama's proposal to overhaul NCLB (No Child Left Behind) made me want to stand up and cheer.  And the fact that at least one fat-cat teacher's union rep and Republicans are already critical is a good sign, too.

What's so great about this proposal?
1.  It re-writes accountability for schools to focus less on testing and more on learning.
2.  It encourages states and schools to set standards based on college and career readiness, instead of arbitrary things like political leanings (see Texas textbook board).
3.   It connects the dots better between funding and real learning, changing funding formulas so that Title I can become a change agent instead of an entitlement program.

That's probably enough for now, but I am excited about these proposals and look forward to the coming debate on education.
