Is it possible to watch Meet the Press without getting mad?

Richard Steele was on the show this morning, and as I watched, my blood pressure slowly rose and rose.  Eventually, I turned the fast forward button on -- my only defense against anger.  I knew Mr. Steele would make me angry, but I chose to watch the show anyway.  Why do I do this to myself?  Because I care about national politics in a way that most people probably don't.  I imagine that what is said in Washington, D.C., actually matters to people like me.  My training as a journalist (such as it was) taught me to look at issues as if they affect real people, because they do.  The real story behind the issues is that people depend on the government for so much more than they are willing to admit.  The real story is that some rich people are actively trying to buy the election, and Richard Steele has no problem with that.  Democrats are also spending money like water, but Republicans seem to have an edge when it comes to outside groups trying to influence elections and self-funding of campaigns.  Yes, the idea that the federal government is too big is a valid idea.  However, it is not supported by facts.  The federal government has an important role to play in all of our lives, and it's time we admitted that fact.  It's also time that Republicans stopped hiding behind conservative rhetoric and stopped favoring the rich in their policies and politics.
