Post-election BLUEs
I guess I haven't had much to write about for the past month. The election has come and gone, and my traditional middle of the road politics aren't sitting well with me. I am a registered Democrat, but I have voted Republican against my natural inclination in the last few elections. Yesterday, I voted for both Republicans and Democrats. I voted for the winner in 19 out of 27 elections (not counting ballot initiatives). If I were a political pundit, that might make me happy. But it doesn't, really. I care about ending some of the economic imbalance in the world, and I support efforts to dedicate 1% of the U.S. GDP to ending global poverty and AIDS. I tried to get feedback from my candidates for Congress about this issue by sending emails, but received no response from either side. What's an uninformed voter to do? I voted my gut, both in the Congressional races and in all the other ones. The Democrat in the congressional race lost my vote by not answering my emails. My gut instinct is that Jon Porter isn't as bad as they painted him to be, and I've actually had a chance to ask him a question or two in person. We'll see if he doesn't ruin the world in the next two years. The Democrats in Nevada disappointed me with their choice of candidates, and they came up short again.

I tried to follow the Nevada election through CNN.com. I think that, like you, a lot of Nevadans chose to select individual candidates rather than to follow party lines. The other thing that struck my eye was that Clark County voters voted for Titus over Gibbons (49%to 43%) whereas most other Nevadan counties sided with Gibbons. I'm aware of the so-called scandal, but did that affect Southern Nevadans in their votes more so the rest of Nevada? Perhaps Las Vegans lean more to the Left due to the influx of Calfiornians. What do you think?
Southern Nevada is definitely the liberal end of the state. It's not solidly blue, though -- more like a dark purple. I don't think the scandal had a huge effect here -- most people I talked to, not knowing most of their politics, didn't believe the charges against Gibbons. It seemed pretty trumped-up to me. More concerning is Gibbons' unwillingness to debate Titus except in limited ways and his secrecy so far with the press. We'll see how it all pans out.

is one Las Vegas Democrat who disagrees with me. See the Feb. 2nd "Daily Glean" section for his opinion of Gov. Gibbons.
