"Another year's survival"

I've been listening to the Killers' second album (Sam's Town) lately, and I'm starting to really like it. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of reading a review of the album before I listened to the album myself, so I've had to fight with the reviewer in my head as I make up my mind about the album. There are definitely some ham-handed rhymes and other questionable lyrics on the disc, but it does not deserve the unkind comparison with Bon Jovi that the author of the review made. I particularly like "Another Year's Survival," (sorry if that's not the actual title -- I go by the most repeated line in the chorus usually), which is the fourth song on the disc, I think. It's a song about growing up. The album as a whole is about growing up, and it has an innocence that I really like along with some driving guitar and catchy hooks. The song that's on the radio right now from the album is "Can You Read My Mind?" which, from the title alone, you can guess is not one of the stronger songs on the album. I skip that song when I play the CD in my car. I like the earthiness of the album -- and I mean this as a compliment -- that it really attempts to capture some of the wide openness of the desert landscape that surrounds Las Vegas. I feel like they really are a hometown band for me, and not just because I know their manager. The album is a homegrown Las Vegas album, which is kind of a first for rock music. That fact alone makes it interesting enough for me to own, but besides that, the music is good enough for me to recommend to a friend.
