Pirates 3: At World's End
I enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean 3 this afternoon. It has some funny, surreal touches and good performances in the lead roles. There's a lot going on, so the plot does get a little confusing, and some big things get lost in the shuffle -- a love affair between the goddess Calypso and Davy Jones, the meaning of "pieces of eight," and a ship based in Singapore that plays a big role in the beginning and middle but not the end of the movie. Besides all that, though, the movie really hums along in a breezy, madcap way, and it doesn't do to dwell on the details. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone, who liked both previous Pirates movie, surprised me by not liking this one. The only thing he and I agree on about this movie is that Geoffrey Rush is great as Captain Barbossa. Keira Knightley is also particularly good, and Chow Yun-Fat makes a good pirate, too. Usually, I agree more with Mr. Travers. Anyway, go see the movie for a great summer ride, and you will probably be pleasantly surprised. I was.
