I read an excerpt of Jim Webb's book yesterday on the Meet the Press website. He's got to be an interesting name for Obama's people to look at when choosing a vice presidential candidate. He has military experience, having served in Vietnam, he comes from an important state for Obama to hold onto in the general election (Virginia), and he could bring some experience in the foreign policy area, especially related to Asia. Still, his book reveals him to be a pretty cautious politician, so he might not fit with Obama's style. He has a reverence for the Senate and the grand history of the U.S., according to his book, that is appealing. I just hope it's not stultifying.
Here's another, meatier excerpt, available from parade.com. Not sure how long the link will last. This excerpt, though, shows why Jim Webb appears so cautious to me. He describes meaningfully the combat experience he had, and the lessons he learned from it. He is a veteran, and a politician, but a veteran first. His bedrock principles were formed in Vietnam, and he explains very well why he believes that leaders should be held accountable for their decisions, especially their decisions about war. His call to action is worth reading, so please look at the link if you have the time.
