Star Trek

Saw the new Star Trek movie, and thought it was excellent. Speedy pacing, a good combination of drama and action, a new mix of characters and moments of heroism for all of the major familiar characters (including Chekhov and Sulu) made for a fun movie-going experience. Spock's journey from boyhood to manhood, becoming captain of the Enterprise, and confronting some personal emotions (yes, emotions) along the way, was compelling, and Kirk's journey -- entirely different yet intertwined with Spock's -- was just as compelling. I am definitely not a Trekkie, so I'm not disturbed in the least by any deviance from the major plot points of the previous movies or the TV show. I think this movie is a major improvement over those efforts. The only thing lacking was a truly compelling enemy to fight -- the Romulan from the future was certainly menacing enough in appearance, but he didn't have the same hubris as Khan or the "resistance is futile" conceptual cache of the Borg. This enemy had a good back story, but he didn't get to emote much on screen, nor was he defeated with quite the same difficulty as one might expect. All in all, it was entertaining and quite a ride through space.
