Valentine's Day
Went to see this movie the weekend AFTER V-day, and it was still going strong as far as drawing a crowd to the theaters. The casting director did a great job of matching up couples and potential couples in this movie -- Julia Roberts has a small part, but the lead roles belong to Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Garner. I'm not a huge fan of Mr. Kutcher, but Ms. Garner was good at playing a jilted lover. I also liked the couple played by Topher Grace and Anne Hathaway. Anne stole scenes with her raunchy "adult phone entertainer" bits, and Topher was solid as the kid from Indiana who's a little lost in L.A. Also, Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx deserve mention in supporting roles. The couple with the most chemistry was probably the oldest couple in the movie -- Shirley Maclaine and Hector Elizondo, who play Estelle and Edgar. There was a kid actor who provides some glue to the movie, playing their grandson, but I don't know that he played the lovesick kid role as well as the kid in Love Actually. Most of my predictions about where the movie was headed came true, which is a rare event for me. Usually I don't even try to predict, but this time it had to be done. The movie is great for those who are willing to give in to love, so I'd recommend it to those who feel a little sappy this time of year or who just want to lose themselves in the minor difficulties and major pratfalls of romantic comedy.
