A New Future for Vegas?

With the news today that the owners of the Riviera on the Strip have declared bankruptcy, I'm wondering if there is the possibility of reinventing the Las Vegas economy.  The tourist-based economy that we've been relying on is clearly vulnerable to the overall economy, so the need to "diversify" is continually cited by leaders of government and the business community.  Our economy was built on gaming and construction, and when construction dried up, the boom came to a screeching halt.  I'm not sure where we can go from here, but it will take more than a state-wide stimulus or a single new casino to restart the economy.  I also think the concept of sustainable growth needs to be explored -- are we sacrificing the environment for short-term gain?  The concepts needed to turn Las Vegas' economy around are beyond me, but it would probably involve a whole new infrastructure and basic research that makes better use of the resources we have.  Investments in education are rarely seen as an economic issue, but Silicon Valley got started because of a concentration of academic and private enterprises.  Who's to say that it can't happen here?
